300 miles down, 110 to go to the Rushton Inn in Davis. We left bright and early this morning at 8:00am. This trip has been two years in the making -- we originally meant to make it in April 2007, but we ended up using the money we had set aside to secure our apartment instead. Oh well, better late than never. I'm sure it will be well worth the wait.
We were so excited yesterday that we weren't sure we'd get a good night's sleep. We decided to cheat a bit and we took some over-the-counter sleeping pills from CVS (pretty much Tylenol PM w/o the Tylenol). They worked like a charm for me, but Ashlee had some trouble falling asleep and she was extra groggy in the morning.
The I-5, once you get past L.A., is simply miles and miles of nothing. The road itself is a straight-shot and the scenery is much of the same: fields, orchards, and cows.
I already forgot the name of the town that we stopped in for lunch -- Kettleville? I do know that we took a pitstop in a little place called Gorman. I also know that we ate at this little burger joint that some of you may have heard of: In-N-Out. Ah...burgers, fries, and shakes -- the vacation has definitely started. What am I saying, we've been eating our hearts out ever since we learned that we are leaving for Mongolia in June.
Just a few observations from the road:
1) I now understand that old cheese commercial that said something to the effect: "Good cheese comes from happy cows and happy cows come from California." We have certainly passed a fair number of happy-looking cows. They were just milling about in beautiful green fields. On the flipside, we also passed by a few industrial-sized feedlots where the cows did NOT look so happy. I hope my cheese doesn't come from those cows. On second thought, that's probably why my In-N-Out burger only set me back $2.
2) We've actually had a fair number of tumbleweeds blow across the road. I thought that just happened in cheesy Western movies. Didn't we leave John Wayne back in Orange County?
3) What the heck is the Grapevine? If it was that stretch of uphill road right after Burbank, then it wasn't so bad. What's all the fuss about?
4) I don't know if drivers out here know about the cell phone ban while driving.
That's all for now. We'll be in Davis in about two hours. Tomorrow we'll spend the day in Sacramento. It should be fun!
PS - Hamish has proved to be a real road warrior! That Hyundai salesman was right when he told my dad a few years back that these cars are just itching to get out on that open highway. Also, Ashlee's "Road Trip" music playlist has been awesome.
