Anyways, I've been wanting to do this project for a while now, but I had no idea how to get started. Fortunately, this year we were blessed with some enthusiastic sitemates and one of them, Justin, was just itching to get a project going. I showed him the notebook I put together and he was stoked. He has plenty of painting experience and he's more than willing to get his hands dirty.
We shared our plans with my school's director and she also jumped on board. She seems a bit nervous about it though and she has constantly been asking, "It'll look nice, right? It won't be ugly?" We are trying our best to keep her reassured. Just today she asked, "Have you done this before." Nope!
Anyways, with her go-ahead we approached the local branch of World Vision for funding. I have done a fair amount of translating for them over the past year so the office manager owed me a favor. We explained the project and he enthusiastically help us buy $50 worth of supplies.
We started the first step of the project today: framing the map and painting the background ocean blue. We worked in the afternoon when most classes were finished, but we still had plenty of gawkers -- which is great because once we get everything set up, we want students to help us finish it. As we were wrapping things up today, a group of boys timidly approached and asked if they could help. Of course! Since we were pretty much done, though, we asked them to come back on Monday after the paint dries. They were pretty excited, especially when they saw my camera and asked to be in a few pictures.
Here are some pictures of the set-up:
After we finished, we stood back and admired our work -- until a couple teachers walked by and asked us why we made the map so small...
