This weekend was Olgii's annual Golden Eagle Festival, a time when Kazakh eagle hunters gather to display their eagle pageantry to mobs of Western tourists. It was a great time hanging out with friends, meeting new people, and avoiding being kicked by horses and drooled on by eagles.
This year 7 Peace Corps friends made the trek to Olgii from near and far to partake in the festivities. For a few of them, it was their first time seeing Olgii, and they seemed to really enjoy it and all its Kazakh-ness. I also made friends with a number of tourists including a photo-traveler from Alaska who took some really amazing pictures (that I hope to get my hands on), a London journalist from the Financial Times, and a Lonely Planet travel writer in town doing research to update the Mongolia guide book.
Here's some pictures. Enjoy!
